What CRAFT stands for

CContext

Situation and facts first: data snippets, background, channel, deadline, or pasted source text.

RRole

Who the model writes as or for — editor, analyst, coach, support agent.

AAction

Single primary task with verb-first clarity. Split sub-tasks as bullets under Action if needed.

FFormat

Output structure: bullets, table columns, JSON keys, email sections, word counts.

TTone

Voice for the channel: casual Slack, formal report, empathetic support, technical precise.

Empty template

Context: [background and data]
Role: [perspective]
Action: [primary task]
Format: [output structure]
Tone: [voice]

Filled example

Context: Q3 support ticket themes attached — top tags: billing confusion, export failures, mobile login.
Role: Support team lead writing for internal product standup.
Action: Summarize patterns and propose two process fixes.
Format: 5 bullets — pattern, frequency, suggested fix; max 15 words per bullet.
Tone: Neutral and factual, no blame language.

CRAFT — context-first prompting

CRAFT puts Context before Role so the model reads facts before persona. That order reduces answers that sound plausible but ignore supplied data — common when Role or Action comes first in a vague prompt.

Action stays singular: one primary job per prompt. If you need research then write then edit, use three CRAFT prompts or switch to RISEN for explicit Steps.

Format and Tone that models obey

Weak Format lines say "be concise." Strong Format lines say "7 bullets, max 12 words each, start each with a verb" or "Markdown table with columns Feature | Risk | Owner." Tone should name the channel: Slack update, board memo, customer email.

PromptMake fills all five CRAFT sections from your rough input and outputs a combined prose block for paste-ready use in ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.

Daily CRAFT workflow

Keep a personal CRAFT cheat sheet: Context = paste or summarize, Role = one line, Action = verb, Format = structure, Tone = channel. Run recurring tasks (standup summary, meeting notes, email draft) through the same Format and Tone slots so outputs stay consistent week to week.

Pair CRAFT generation on PromptMake with one human edit pass for facts before sending anything customer-facing.

FAQ

What is the CRAFT prompt framework?

CRAFT stands for Context, Role, Action, Format, and Tone. It is a five-part template that front-loads background facts, then specifies who is speaking, what to do, how output should look, and how it should sound.

CRAFT vs RTF — what is the difference?

RTF uses Role, Task, Format — three blocks. CRAFT splits Task into Action, adds Context before Role, and adds Tone. Use CRAFT when background data and voice matter; RTF for quick one-off asks.

CRAFT vs CO-STAR — which is simpler?

CRAFT has five sections; CO-STAR has six with separate Style, Audience, and Response. CRAFT is faster for internal tasks; CO-STAR is richer for external comms where audience and response format need explicit slots.

Should Context include long documents?

Paste summaries or key excerpts in Context, not entire PDFs, when possible. Put the CRAFT header first, then append long source text under a Source: label so instructions stay visible.

Can CRAFT prompts include constraints?

Yes. Add constraint bullets under Action or Format: "Do not invent metrics", "Mark unknowns as TBD", "Max 120 words".

Is it free?

Yes — 3 free text generations per day without signup on PromptMake.
